Oh, what a fun experience we had yesterday harvesting our winter wheat crop at the Bernhard Museum Complex! Due to the heat and our lack of experience we got a taste of just how hard work farm work can be. We learned how to create bundles of wheat called “sheaves” and left them standing in the field to dry out.
The sheaves are typically stacked together to create a shock which is basically a quantity of sheaves stacked together. Due to our modest crop we righted our sheaves and left them to stand on their own. The wheat is used in our education programs as a demonstration to show how wheat is grown, harvested and ground into flour. For a chance to grind wheat into flour and sample our fresh hot biscuits baked in our wood burning stove, stop by the Heritage Trail on August 6th and 7th.
