Gold Presentation Rich in Information
Placer County Museums Docent, Don Albrecht, gave a terrific presentation for the March 13th Community Education program: Advanced Placer Mining Techniques. His lecture detailed the evolution of placer mining methods from the rocker and long tom to hydraulic mining. As part of his program, Don assembled two large hydraulic monitors, which are essentially large water cannons used to wash away mountainsides to get at the gold within. He also assembled a large sluice box and showed a variety of historic photographs and documents that provided the audience with a clear picture of how gold was mined over 100 years ago. Everyone enjoyed the program and many stayed afterward – thankfully – to help break down the monitors and load them into Don’s truck!
