Docent Appreciation Dinner 2009

As a thank you for the wonderful work our volunteers do year round, the Placer County Museums recently held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Volunteers who donate their time and enthusiasm at our Collections Management Facility, Archives and Research Center, education programs, and our many museums, were on hand to enjoy a delicious B-B-Q dinner. Despite the unseasonably warm temperature, those in attendance had a pleasant Sunday afternoon picnic visiting with other docents and staff.

The meal was topped off with a desert traditionally known as a “stacking cake.” It comes from a gold rush wedding tradition wherein several people would bake cakes and stack them together with layers of jam and fruit, into a multi layered wedding cake. The results were absolutely delicious.

The evening culminated in an awards ceremony in which many were recognized for their contributions to the Placer County Museums. There were two special awards given for Outstanding Volunteer, the first one going to Barbara Fernald and the second to Joy Williams.

The Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is one of many things we do for our volunteers. In August we invite our volunteers to accompany us on an appreciation trip. Last year, we went to Modesto and toured the McHenry Mansion and the McHenry Museum. We’re in the planning stages for this year’s trip. Volunteers are also invited to our Christmas Luncheon in December and to all of our exhibit openings and programs.
